Composite Deck With Hidden Clip System

The client had a great house with awesome views off their first story veranda area, where it was located over their first story, up over the garages. The whole surface had a waterproofing membrane over it. It was on a significant slope so that water would drain off towards the guttering of the house and the internal drains and all of that of the house.

With that angle and the key component being that waterproofing membrane, to keep the integrity of the structure, you're not allowed to pierce that waterproofing membrane in any way.

We had to come up with a solution for a deck to flatten out that area and make it look a lot more presentable and more user friendly, whilst having a secure structure up there that does not pierce the waterproofing membrane.

The owner wanted a low maintenance option that didn't require any maintenance over the long term since they are an old couple. They didn't want to have to oil it or stain it or clean it in any way.

Project Outline

The solution that we offered the client was to install an aluminium frame which is completely made of aluminium. It's straight and flat and it doesn't move in the weather, making it an accurate and suitable foundation for the composite deck.

The frame fits together with metal fixings and brackets, resulting in no timber whatsoever in the framing element. Instead of piles, we used plastic pedestals. These pedestals are called neurojacks.

The neurojacks are adjustable, self levelling and adjustable in height, so that we were able to prop the deck platform, frame platform up to the height we needed it to be. It accounted for the slope of the waterproofing membrane.

We use the neurojack pedestals with the aluminium outdoor framing on top of it, and then a mod wood silver gum composite decking with a hidden clip system.

Our Solution

Our hidden clip system works with any framing, we were able to fix it to the aluminium framing and clip the decking down onto the frame, securing it.

There was no piercing of the waterproof membrane and the client was left with an awesome looking finished product that they were stoked with. The drainage was not affected in any way.

It's completely weatherproof, as rain comes in and drains through the gaps in the deck down onto the waterproof membrane, it drains out as it normally should. It'll run around our plastic feed, there'll be no rot.

There is an extended lifetime warranty on this system, with the components involved covered for up to 25 years. This makes it a reliable decking solution, giving the client peace of mind.

We managed to complete the job, start to finish, in 4 days, hand carrying each piece of decking solution up to the second story.
